Trivia[]
- Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein produced by certain bacteria. It prevents the release of a neurotransmitter and thus causes paralysis in humans. Infection with the bacterium &/or its toxin causes the disease/toxidrome known as botulism. The toxin is used commercially for medical and cosmetic purposes, often under the moniker BoTox, which would explain its in-game presence in a medical setting.
- Despite the description, the poison acts identically to other lethal poison vials.
- In reality Botulinum toxins usually take anywhere from 18 to 36 hours after consumption before symptoms begin to appear, making it a rather slow and ineffective poison (this is also why there has been very little military or state sponsored research into weaponizing Botulinum). Death from botulism usually occurs within a few days if left untreated. High doses may take effect quicker, but would still usually require at least a few hours before symptoms began.
- Most medical "BoTox" preparations are fairly diluted and tend to use individual isolated strains that are both easier & safer to work with. Unique preparations are also more desirable to many drug companies because they're able to be patented as a new & unique brand name drug/medicine.
- With appropriate medical care Botulism is quite treatable and has a rather low 5-10% mortality rate. A state-of-the-art facility, such as GAMA, would be more than equipped to handle such cases, especially if they already work with Botox, as accidents can, and occasionally do, happen.
- Treatment usually consists of administering an antitoxin to bind with and block any remaining free Botulinum toxin that may still be present in the blood stream. Botulinum toxin that has already taken effect cannot be reversed with modern medicine so respiratory support (IE: a mechanical ventilator) may be needed until the patient can breath again on their own. This can range from several weeks to a few months depending on multiple factors, such as patient age/health, dose, how quickly treatment was administered, etc... (However, there is current ongoing experimental research into a post exposure reversal agent for Botulinum, as of July 2025)
