Chasing a Ghost is the fourth mission in HITMAN™ 2. Agent 47 travels to the west-Indian megacity Mumbai in order to eliminate the three leaders of the Shadow Client's eastern-cell, and all members of the recently-revived street gang The Crows: Vanya Shah, Dawood Rangan, and the mysterious Maelstrom, whose appearance is unknown.

Diana Burnwood (VO): "Good evening, 47. The militia has released a hostage tape, outing the existence of Providence to the world. This was a fatal mistake and our analysts are tracing its origin as we speak. In the meantime, we have a lead on Lucas Grey's top lieutenant.

Turns out the Delgado cartel's counterfeiting unit was creating fake IDs for the militia and one operative in particular stands out; Wazir Kale. An infamous South China Sea pirate, better known by his nom de guerre: The Maelstrom.

The Maelstrom and his cutthroat band of outlaws were the scourge of the shipping industry in the post-recession years. But his reign of terror came to an end with the disastrous 2014 hijacking of the super tanker, 'Frances King.' Chinese elite forces stormed the ship, resulting in the deaths of a dozen sailors and most of The Maelstrom's crew, but Kale slipped away unseen.

The Maelstrom's connection to Grey is unknown, but we believe it was he who carried out the audacious killing of a Providence CEO in Shanghai - along with two reactivated members of his old pirate gang; Vanya Shah; a shady figure in Mumbai's criminal underworld and Dawood Rangan; the gang's old cashier turned dodgy movie producer.

Shah, Rangan and The Maelstrom form Lucas Grey's "eastern cell". They are a crack strike team and stopping them is our client's most pressing concern. Unfortunately, the elusive Maelstrom appears to have vanished into the seedy underbelly of Mumbai - the cradle of his criminal legend - and no one knows his whereabouts or what he currently looks like. So. A bandit queen, a showbiz charlatan and one certifiable ghost.

Description[]

Lucas Grey's militia have publicly killed one of Providence's operatives in Shanghai, prompting Providence to retaliate. Agent 47 has been tasked with hunting down the man responsible for the attack: Wazir Kale, also known as the Maelstrom.

A notorious sea pirate, Kale vanished from sight several years ago after a attempted hijacking went wrong, but has reemerged to work alongside Lucas Grey, along with two members of his old crew. 47 must travel to Mumbai to eliminate the Maelstrom and his two crew members: Vanya Shah, a crime lord ruling over the city's slums, and Dawood Rangan, a shady film producer. However, the Maelstrom's current whereabouts and appearance are unknown, meaning 47 must investigate in order to draw him out...

Some time after the mission, 47 and Diana follow Grey's trail to an abandoned orphanage in Romania, where they are confronted by Grey himself. There, Grey informs 47 of the past they shared together, and Providence's involvement in the people they would become...

The production of "Mumbai Hero" is coming to a close but it seems there's a spot of trouble. Lead actress Karisma Haasan has refused to do a kissing scene with Rangan and has gotten rid of the script by tossing it down an elevator shaft. Shame... The scene features the use of a large industrial wind machine. Could be worth investigating.

A tailor, a Slum Queen and a dress...

It appears Vanya Shah is in the market for a dress fit for a queen. She's sent after a local tailor but for some reason the man refuses to cooperate. A man of your impeccable tastes should be able to fill in perfectly for the tailor.

A local hitman known as "The Kashmirian" is in Mumbai on business. He set up a sniper nest in a tower above a stairwell in the local chawl. It appears he's targeting the luxury apartment belonging to Dawood Rangan, but he encountered a problem. Perhaps you can assist him?

Picture Perfect

A missing cast member and a pending photo shoot.

Gregory Arthur, a famous broadway star, is apparently late for a photo shoot inside Rangan's unfinished tenement tower. Hang on, he uploaded a selfie on social media about half an hour ago. Hm, the Mumbai food district... He's likely still there, 47.

A Close Shave

The Barber and The Maelstrom.

This barber is tangled up in some shady business, 47. But even more interesting, he may have seen a picture of The Maelstrom in the hideout of the street gang known as the Crows. That picture would be very helpful to our cause.

To Kill a Peacock...

Well, it looks like there's a power struggle underway in Mumbai. Vanya Shah has contracted a hired killer, The Kashmirian, to eliminate Dawood Rangan. With Rangan out of the picture, you should be able to pick up that contract and get in touch with Shah through one of the city's payphones. Perhaps it will set off a beneficial chain of events?

This is certainly interesting, 47. Dawood Rangan has contracted a hired killer, The Kashmirian, to eliminate Vanya Shah. Well, with Shah already eliminated, you should get in touch with Rangan through one of the city's payphones and let him know the contract is fulfilled. Something is bound to come from it.

Two for One

"So, the hitman known as "The Kashmirian" is in Mumbai on an interesting mission. Information on his laptop has recovered a rather complicated situation. Initially hired by Vanya Shah, The Kashmirian arrived in Mumbai to eliminate Dawood Rangan. However, his notes indicate that he decided to double down on his contract. He contacted Rangan and made him an offer - double the money and The Kashmirian would eliminate Shah instead. Rangan agreed and paid half the sum up front. However, The Kashmirian appears to have decided to fulfill both contracts - first eliminating Rangan and then Shah. What his ulterior motive is, however, is unclear."

Trivia[]

An Elusive Target was originally planned to appear in Mumbai, allowing players to unlock the Imperial Classic with Gloves. However, In the HITMAN™ 2 October Roadmap, IOI confirmed that the suit would instead be unlocked by completing The Divine Descendance (then changed in HITMAN™ III to completing Escalations - Track 2, Tier 11 instead).
- However, the Special Assignment set in Mumbai, Illusions Of Grandeur, may have been an Elusive Target originally, as the mission briefing contains Elusive Target icons.
Rangan's under-construction luxury apartment, Rangan Tower, is based on the real Mumbai's Antilia building; the most valuable private residence in the world, whose ostentatious use as a single-family home has garnered much local criticism.
In the files for Mumbai, there is a disguise named "High Profile DJ", based on an NPC of the same name. The NPC is listed in the mission file but is nowhere to be found in-level.
Curiously, there are numerous calendars on the walls of various rooms throughout the level dated April 2019, months before the first game’s main campaign begins. However, the "April" in "April 2019" is spelt "Apirl" on the calendars, suggesting they're (intentionally) not particularly accurate.
A dialogue between Dawood Rangan and a bodyguard called Mike (named Pranav Varma in the Contracts Mode) indicates that this mission takes place a day after Holi, which in real life is a Hindu festival celebrating the arrival of Spring and taking place in March.
