Chasing a Ghost is the fourth mission in HITMAN™ 2. Chasing a Ghost[]
The Maelstrom and his cutthroat band of outlaws were the scourge of the shipping industry in the post-recession years. But his reign of terror came to an end with the disastrous 2014 hijacking of the super tanker, 'Frances King.' Chinese elite forces stormed the ship, resulting in the deaths of a dozen sailors and most of The Maelstrom's crew, but Kale slipped away unseen.
The Maelstrom's connection to Grey is unknown, but we believe it was he who carried out the audacious killing of a Providence CEO in Shanghai - along with two reactivated members of his old pirate gang; Vanya Shah; a shady figure in Mumbai's criminal underworld and Dawood Rangan; the gang's old cashier turned dodgy movie producer.
Shah, Rangan and The Maelstrom form Lucas Grey's "eastern cell". They are a crack strike team and stopping them is our client's most pressing concern. Unfortunately, the elusive Maelstrom appears to have vanished into the seedy underbelly of Mumbai - the cradle of his criminal legend - and no one knows his whereabouts or what he currently looks like. So. A bandit queen, a showbiz charlatan and one certifiable ghost.
I shall leave you to prepare."
MISSION ACTIVE
Description[]
Lucas Grey's militia have publicly killed one of Providence's operatives in Shanghai, prompting Providence to retaliate. Agent 47 has been tasked with hunting down the man responsible for the attack: Wazir Kale, also known as the Maelstrom.
A notorious sea pirate, Kale vanished from sight several years ago after a attempted hijacking went wrong, but has reemerged to work alongside Lucas Grey, along with two members of his old crew. 47 must travel to Mumbai to eliminate the Maelstrom and his two crew members: Vanya Shah, a crime lord ruling over the city's slums, and Dawood Rangan, a shady film producer. However, the Maelstrom's current whereabouts and appearance are unknown, meaning 47 must investigate in order to draw him out...
Some time after the mission, 47 and Diana follow Grey's trail to an abandoned orphanage in Romania, where they are confronted by Grey himself. There, Grey informs 47 of the past they shared together, and Providence's involvement in the people they would become...

"Mumbai Hero" Script |

A Close Shave |
---|
"A barber is tangled up in some shady business. But even more interesting, he may have seen a picture of The Maelstrom in the hideout of the street gang known as The Crows. That picture would be very helpful to your cause." |
A Note to Sagar, the Barber |
---|
"A recent picture of The Maelstrom, shown to Sagar, the Barber." |
A Picture of the Maelstrom |
---|
"A recent photograph of the Maelstrom. Extremely helpful when trying to identify him in the slums." |
A Questionable Test |
---|
"Maelstrom decides to test how reliable the mapping network for his latest plans is." |

Hoist the Flag |

Industrial Fan Instructions |
---|
"According to this manual, the industrial strength fan used in the "Mumbai Hero" kissing scene has two settings. One will provide a nice breeze while the other will simulate a hurricane in strength. The hurricane mode has been disabled and will need to be enabled manually on the fan itself." |

---|
"A dongle for the Kashmirian's laptop, which is probably in the chawl somewhere." |
Laundry Business Documents |
---|
"Documents containing registers and financial records belonging to the previous foreman of the Mumbai Laundry business. Apparently, Shah runs her business through the concept of debt slavery, allowing only those who owe her favors to work there. With these in hand, the new foreman might have a shot at giving a coherent report to Shah." |
Lost in the Slums |
---|
"Principal shooting on Rangan's "Mumbai Hero" is coming to an end. Gregory Arthur, the famous broadway star, is apparently due for a photoshoot inside Rangan's unfinished tenement tower. He may have gotten lost in the slums." |
Luxury Apartment Keycard |
---|
"A keycard. Opens the luxury apartment." |
Maelstrom Manifesto #1 |

"The Maelstrom has distributed a number of audio tapes around Mumbai. They recount his philosophy and seem to be used for aggitation and recruitment. In this tape, Maelstrom invites his followers to break with tradition and release themselves from the shackles that bind them in place in society." |
Maelstrom Manifesto #2 |

Maelstrom Manifesto #3 |
---|
"The Maelstrom has distributed a number of audio tapes around Mumbai. They recount his philosophy and seem to be used for aggitation and recruitment. In this tape, the Maelstrom details what must be done to bring down the establishment. His words encourage rebellion and cruelty and warns that fury and anger will be the end of his enemies." |
Maelstrom Manifesto #4 |
---|
"The Maelstrom has distributed a number of audio tapes around Mumbai. They recount his philosophy and seem to be used for aggitation and recruitment. In this tape, we hear the story of how Wazir Kale became The Maelstrom. How local mobsters rounded up his gang of youths and threatened them with being burned alive if you would not reveal the identity of their leader. In the end, in what appears to be a move of insanity, Kale embraces his inner darkness and inexplicably sets his old gang on fire himself - possibly to prove that he is much worse than the mobsters." |
Maelstrom Manifesto #5 |
---|
"The Maelstrom has distributed a number of audio tapes around Mumbai. They recount his philosophy and seem to be used for aggitation and recruitment. This final tape details how Maelstrom took revenge upon the mobster that destroyed his gang and ends with a call to arms. He's clearly trying to build an army." |
Maelstrom Origins |
---|
"A legend on the streets of Mumbai states that Maelstrom was once a member, leader even, of the street gang known as "The Crows." He led them for years until local mobsters engaged the gang in a war that ended killing most of the original Crows. Maelstrom himself escaped and left Mumbai for many years. Now, legend has it he's back for revenge." |
Man from Kashmir |
---|
"After having successfully completed two hits (eliminating Rangan and Shah), The Kashmirian is on the move again. It looks like he's leaving the chawls but where is he going to next?" |
Metalworks Shift Schedule |
---|
"According to a shift schedule in one of the metal workshops, one of the workers is late for his shift." |
Missing Script |
---|
"The production of "Mumbai Hero" is coming to a close but it seems there's a spot of trouble. Lead actress Karisma Haasan has refused to do a kissing scene with Rangan and has gotten rid of the script by tossing it down an elevator shaft. Shame... The scene features the use of a large industrial wind machine. Could be worth investigating." |
Mumbai Laundry Office Key |
---|
"A key to the foreman's office in the Mumbai Laundry." |
Mystery in the Chawls |
---|
"A room in the chawls looks to be used as the base of operations for someone performing surveillance of some sort." |
Neha's Letter |
---|
"A letter adressed to Neha, the female resident on the hill in the slums, reveals that she and Wazir Kale - The Maelstrom - were once romantically involved. Paint By Numbers |
---|
"A local hitman known as "The Kashmirian" is in Mumbai on business. He has set up a sniper nest in a tower above a stairwell in the local chawl. It appears he's targeting the luxury apartment belonging to Dawood Rangan but has encountered a problem. Perhaps you can assist him?" |
Picture of Dawood Rangan |
---|
"A surveillance image of Dawood Rangan in his tower. It looks like he's posing in front of a large canvas of some sort. A note on the back says: "Perfect shot. Painter?"" |

---|
"A surveillance image of Vanya Shah on the bridge overlooking the Mumbai Laundry business. A note on the back says: "Excellent position. Meeting with foreman?"" |
Power Play |
---|
"Vanya Shah has put a contract hit on Dawood Rangan. This has to be some sort of power play." |
Powerful Fan |
---|
"One of the movie set technicians has been forced to hack the control panel of the large fan used on set. The fan was much too powerful for the small set and could blow everything off the roof if used at its highest settings." |
Rangan and the Kashmirian |
---|
"Dawood Rangan has apparently initiated a contract with Karan Dhar, the American-Indian assassin known as The Kashmirian. It is not entirely clear who the target is." |
Request to the Tailor |
---|
""By decree of the generous Vanya Shah, you are hereby called to present to Her a sample of your finest cerulean cloth and to perform a measuring for the most exquisite gown Mumbai has ever seen."" |
Self-Defence |
---|
"Rangan has put out a freelance contract on Vanya Shah in response to her having put one out on him. All is not well in Mumbai." |
Slum Queen Bandit Origin |
---|
"Vanya Shah, the self-proclaimed Queen of the Slums, is apparently of bandit ancestry. The Dacoity were ruthless bandits pillaging the rural areas around Mumbai. Shah apparently learned her violent ways there and honed those skills serving as a pirate in the South China Sea with the legendary Maelstrom." |
Stranger in the Chawl |
---|
"A couple of chawl residents are worried about a stranger living in a rented apartment. He's acting strangely and one of the residents believes he even saw a weapon in the stranger's room. The building manager refuses to address the concern." |
Tea for Two |
---|
"It seems that the Maelstrom is using one of the tea servants in the slums as an informant. The servant keeps a close eye on events in the area and frequently reports to the Maelstrom." |
The Blindfolded Barber |
---|
"The Crows have brought a local barber to their hideout to show him a photograph of someone. The Barber was blindfolded, seemingly to make certain he didn't recall the way to the hideout. It's unclear why he was shown the photograph." |
The Chawls |
---|
"The Mumbai chawls. Intelligence reports show a few residential complaints about a new tenant in the building. Something related to "strange behavior". It might be worth looking into?" |
The Foreman |
---|
"Vanya Shah is eager to meet the new foreman of the Mumbai Laundry business. However, the new foreman has taken refuge in his office, unwilling to meet up with her at this time. You might be able to use this to your advantage." |
The Hill |
---|
"Armed thugs belonging to a street gang known as "The Crows" have evacuated a hill in the slums of Mumbai. This could be worth investigating." |
The Kashmirian's Room |
---|
"The Kashmirian is using one of the rooms in the chawl as his base of operations. After having successfully eliminated Dawood Rangan, he's moved into another apartment and is now monitoring the Mumbai Laundry business." |
The Man in the Tower |
---|
"There's a mysterious man occupying the tower in the Chawls. One of the residents there saw a tripod and some other equipment up there, leading them to believe maybe he's a photographer." |
The Steam Pond |
---|
"Vanya Shah is apparently into meditation. She has gotten a personal steam pond installed in her trainyard and the pond is heated by a gas-powered water heater. Those are known to have serious issues with clogged pressure locks. Maybe an inspection of the setup is in order?" |
Tube of Paint |
---|
"A tube of art paint that looks to have been misplaced among some wall painting equipment. This type of paint is used for canvas painting." |
Two for One |
---|
"So, the hitman known as "The Kashmirian" is in Mumbai on an interesting mission. Information on his laptop has recovered a rather complicated situation. Initially hired by Vanya Shah, The Kashmirian arrived in Mumbai to eliminate Dawood Rangan. However, his notes indicate that he decided to double down on his contract. He contacted Rangan and made him an offer - double the money and The Kashmirian would eliminate Shah instead. Rangan agreed and paid half the sum up front. However, The Kashmirian appears to have decided to fulfill both contracts - first eliminating Rangan and then Shah. What his ulterior motive is, however, is unclear." |
Vanya Shah's Request |
---|
"Vanya Shah has demanded that a local tailor make her a gown, but the tailor is reluctant." |

Trivia[]
- An Elusive Target was originally planned to appear in Mumbai, allowing players to unlock the Imperial Classic with Gloves. However, In the HITMAN™ 2 October Roadmap, IOI confirmed that the suit would instead be unlocked by completing The Divine Descendance (then changed in HITMAN™ III to completing Escalations - Track 2, Tier 11 instead).
- However, the Special Assignment set in Mumbai, Illusions Of Grandeur, may have been an Elusive Target originally, as the mission briefing contains Elusive Target icons.
