Elusive Targets

Icon-Elusive Target

Elusive Targets is a target-based gameplay concept introduced in HITMAN™ and also used in HITMAN™ 2 and HITMAN™ III.

Description[]

Elusive Target(s) missions are unique, as they will only appear once, and if the mission ends in any way, other than restarting, they cannot be attempted by the player again. So far, they've appeared at a rate of about once every few weeks.

The target cannot be seen on the map or through Instinct Mode, but the briefing gives mediocre clues about their location and behavior. The levels are sometimes modified during the mission to seal off certain areas that are available during normal gameplay, to restrict unlocked starting locations that are normally available, and can also contain extra guards.

When a new target is added to the game, players only have a limited time (initially for 48 hours, though the norm has since become 10 days) to compete in the mission, or it'll be lost.

Elusive Target missions themselves take place on maps created for the campaign missions. They may or may not be connected to the main story, though a few reference characters and events therein. As they take place during the exact same time as the original mission on which its map is based, most Elusive Target missions can be though as independent of the storyline.

Rewards[]

After completing varying amounts of Elusive targets, the player will unlock new suits for Agent 47 to wear. Some suits are based on Agent 47's earlier suits, worn in the previous games of the franchise. All unlockable suits can be worn in most game modes and levels (excluding ICA Facility levels, The Vector, Untouchable, Sniper Assassin & Restricted Loadout Escalations [and Patient Zero in HITMAN™ & HITMAN™ 2]), but the changes are mostly cosmetic, with some characters making snarky comments depending on your clothing.

HITMAN™ III[]

Year Two versions of elusive targets were available for all players, including those who had eliminated, failed or missed either or both activations; this was to allow Steam players to play the elusive targets they missed during EGS' one year-exclusivity deal. These elusive targets are exactly the same, and even come with the same, but separately unlocked, challenges. The name change was presumably to circumvent the lock-out players would have if it was just a second iteration of the targets, even though this also included legacy elusive targets which hadn't repeated. The Year 2 ETs were originally labelled in-game with the suffix "#2" (ie "The Collector #2) but as of the May 2022 patch all Year 2 ETs, including those that had already been activated, were relabelled to change the suffix to "Year 2" (ie "The Collector - Year 2").

Year Three and Year Four versions of elusive targets were available for all players the following years, working the same way as the Year Two versions. The Year 4 targets were not labeled in-game as "Year 4" until March 2024's Patch 3.180.

Legacy Elusive Target[]

The Stowaway Legacy Elusive Target was mistakenly reactivated and playable for a short period of time after the February 2021 (v3.11) patch was released on February 23rd, before the in-game tile was updated with The Deceivers as intended.

The Undying Returns Legacy Elusive Target was given the "2024" label instead of "Year 4".

For Years 2 and 3, there are variants that went unused for The Pharmacist, The Sensation and The Warlord Elusive Targets in the game data.

HITMAN - Elusive Targets Reactivated

On October 24th, 2017, iOi announced the return of the elusive targets[1] to be available for purchasers of the newly released Game of the Year Edition. This re-activation would allow players to try any elusive target that they didn't finish on the first appearance. If a target was killed or the mission was failed, they would not return. Sergei Larin would be the first target reactivated on November 17th, 2017.

During their first activations, most elusive targets were active for around 72 hours. Most re-activated elusive targets are active for 10 days. The announcement showed a montage of elusive targets, but Gary Busey was notably absent; this was later revealed to be the result of contractual issues.

The reactivations have deviated from the original release order. The Guru, which was originally the sixteenth target, was reactivated as the ninth target to coincide with the release of HITMAN Spring Pack (a free release of Sapienza). The Pharmacist, the tenth target originally, was also held back as the result of a bug which was fixed in the v1.33 patch and was announced to be added back into the reactivation queue.

HITMAN™ 2[]

On January 8th, 2020, HITMAN 2 Elusive Target reactivations were announced. The first reactivation occurred on January 17th, 2020, with The Undying making a return for ten days. Afterwards, the remaining targets have been reactivated on a monthly basis. Legacy Elusive Targets have been excluded from the reactivation schedule.

HITMAN™ III[]

On November 30th, 2021, as part of the Winter Roadmap, HITMANTM III Elusive Target reactivations were announced. The first reactivation occurred on December 3rd with The Ascensionist, and continued with the other season 3 elusive targets starting every Friday for 6 days each until January 19th, 2022. The Ascensionist was first due to Dubai being in the free starter pack at the time. Legacy Elusive Targets were not included.

On May 5th, 2022, as part of the Year 2 May Roadmap, the very first Reactivated Legacy Elusive Targets were announced, as well as the first standard elusive targets of any kind to have two activated at once. These, like all reactivations, were not playable if you completed or failed them the first time round.

It was announced alongside the World of Assassination Spring Roadmap 2023 that the end of the year would see the "Year 2 Elusive Target Re Run Galore", where previously released Year 2 variants would be reactivated for those that missed their original release. However, the Winter Roadmap released later in the year revealed it had been renamed to simply "Elusive Target Galore". By the time the Galore began, it was revealed that the Year 3 variants would be reactivated instead of the previously announced Year 2 variants. They were released in 2 batches of 11 Elusive Targets each, one on December 22nd, and the other on January 19th, 2024, the first time that multiple Elusive Targets were released at the same time. Like all reactivations, these were only available to players if they weren't completed or failed the first time round.

Trivia[]

  • Gary Busey was selected as a target by the community, who were asked to choose between either Gary Busey or Gary Cole. This is also presumably the reason for the longer time period (168 hours, a full week) when he was available as a target.[2] Cole also appeared as himself in the mission, but not as the target.
  • The tenth elusive target also was available for a whole week. The reason is possibly found from the official forum; a user had to leave the town for work-related reasons September 16, which meant he/she would have missed his/her 10th ET. After a brief discussion, a moderator commented that he'll ask the team if there was anything they could do.
  • The Undying, The Undying Returns, The Congressman and The Deceivers are the only Elusive Target missions that feature the exact same target, which is Mark Faba and Anthony L. Troutt.
  • In HITMAN™ 2, the target intel and mission still images of Anthony L. Troutt, Brendan Conner, Richard J. Magee, and Richard M. Foreman have been tweaked.
  • Before 47 destroys the Data Core in End of an Era, various HITMAN™ Elusive Targets are shown in the data files. This confirms that Elusive Target contracts are in fact a canon part of the story. Despite Elusive Targets being canon, there is inconsistencies with their story as they are present at the same time with campaign targets during missions.
    • This cutscene has inconsistencies as the targets from the cut The Brothers Elusive Target can be seen, while other targets like Sister Yulduz (that didn't appear in the original unreleased Elusive Target that was adapted into The Source) are missing.

Target UI References[]

There was a bug in HITMANTM where players could replay Elusive Contracts through Contracts Mode, that was uploaded with their UI references. Most of the Elusive Target UI names are based on alcoholic drinks (see below for more details), with the sole exception being The Drop.
