Tobias Rieper is the alias of Agent 47.
An alias is an assumed or additional name used by a person, frequently to conceal their true identity, or such a name applied to a person by others. In the case of 47, the alias Tobias Rieper is used when he checks-in establishments such as hotels, hospitals and other public spaces where the signing of guestbooks is necessary.
The first time Agent 47 used his alias was in the hit to kill Lee Hong, when he settled one account in the Wang Fou Restaurant.
Background[]
The Tobias Rieper character is an extremely wealthy corporate shark who is also involved in numerous criminal activities. He is purportedly a friend of Viktor Novikov, which is how he was able to attend the IAGO auction. Besides his job as a businessman, he was a cat burglar and thief-for-hire, and has been linked to the planning of the infamous Sierra Leone diamond heist in the late 1990’s.
Rieper is a registered patient at the GAMA hospital, and has his check-ups there, during one such procedure his examiner noted his unusual biology to be marvelous and described him as a walking stem cell.
Rieper signed up for Haven to erase his identity of being an international thief.
Appearance[]
He has light blue eyes, and is pale with a completely bald head. If his attributes are listed the same as 47, then he is 6'2 (1,88m) tall and his weight is stated as 187 lbs (84kg).
History[]
The alias was first used in Hitman: Codename 47 in The Lee Hong Assassination. Agent 47 settles an account at the Wang Fou Restaurant in order to eliminate his first main target, Lee Hong. At the bar, Agent 47 is suggested to visit the restaurant's brothel and 47 uses Tobias Rieper for the first time. Later on, the alias is again used in the Thermal Bath Hotel during the UN meeting, as well as in the final mission in the Satu Mare Mental Institute.
In Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, 47 does not use the alias, but his prior use of it is referenced in Shogun Showdown. While infiltrating Masahiro Hayamoto’s stronghold to assassinate him, he encounters Lei Ling, who recognizes him as Mr. Rieper, the brothel customer who helped her escape Lee Hong’s clutches. She is answered by 47 telling her to never call him that again, as he has left that name behind, and then proceeds to chastise her for getting back with another "hotshot crimelord" after he saved her. She asks to be saved again, since she's now bored, and gives Agent 47 the key card to access the upper level where Hayamoto is.
The alias was again used in some HITMAN™ episodes. In The Showstopper, this is the name 47 gives to Dalia Margolis when she approaches him at her IAGO auction and does not recognize him. She then asks for a background check on his identity, which returns a perfectly normal businessman but with very few pictures, which makes Dalia suspect Tobias Rieper is a manufactured identity; a correct assumption by a former spy.
In Club 27, this is the name on 47's booking for room 205 at the Himmapan, while in Situs Inversus Tobias Rieper is the alias used in order to enter the GAMA Private Hospital. In Golden Handshake, 47 gives the name Rieper when arranging a private meeting with one of the bank tellers. In The Last Resort, this is the name 47 uses to book into Haven Island, claiming to be an international thief in need of a new identity.
In the mission The Farewell, Diana Burnwood refers to 47 as Rieper.
Trivia[]
The name Rieper is clearly a reference to The Grim Reaper. In some mythologies the Grim Reaper is a personification of death often depicted as a robed skeleton carrying a scythe, who causes the victim's death by coming to collect that person's soul.
- In the mission The Bjarkhov Bomb in Contracts, Agent 47's codename was "Mr. Byrd", according to Yurishka.
- Although Agent 47 explained to the receptionist that his name is Tobias Rieper in the mission Traditions of the Trade in Codename 47, his alias turns into "Mr. Metzger" in Contracts.
- In the mission Till Death Do Us Part in Blood Money, Agent 47 introduces himself to the Margeaux LeBlanc as "Jacob Leiter", a friend of her father. Probably the agreed alias for the hit.
- In the mission A House of Cards in Blood Money, Agent 47 has a reservation for Room 701 under the alias of Dr. Cropes.
