Hungary is a country in Central Europe with a population of around 10 million people and a diverse history. It appeared already two times in the Hitman series.

The Kingdom of Hungary was founded in 1001 by the Magyar Árpád dynasty, a family with Finno-Ugric roots. It quickly became one of the great powers in Central and Eastern Europe and controlled land from Romania to Croatia. However, in 1526 King Louis II died during the Battle of Mohács against the Ottomans, and the future of Hungary was at stake. A full-scale war between the Ottomans and the Austrians was the result, because both empires wanted the control over the Hungarian lands. In the end, Hungary was divided between both of them, but in 1699 the Austrians succeeded to defeat the Ottoman Empire in the War of the Holy League, which led to a Hungarian reunification under Austrian rule.

Many Hungarians were not happy under the Austrian rule, like many minorities in the Austrian Empire they were treated like second-class citizens. Because of that, the Hungarians revolted in 1848 and demanded their independence. Unfortunately for the Hungarians, the Austrians were able to crush the Revolution with the help of Russian troops and restored their power. In 1868, however, the Austrian emperor Francis Joseph introduced extensive reforms for the fragile empire: The old Austrian Empire was reformed into a Dual Monarchy, dividing the empire into an Austrian and an Hungarian part, ruled by the Habsburg dynasty: The birth of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which lasted until 1918, when it was dismantled by the Entente after World War I. Hungary had finally gained their independence after almost 500 years, but had lost almost all of it territories to neighboring states such as Romania, Czechoslovakia or Yugoslavia.

During World War II, Hungary fought on the side of the Axis to gain back all of its former territories, but was conquered by the Soviets in late 1944. In 1949 the communists seized power and declared the Hungarian People's Republic. They stayed in power until 1989, when president Mátyás Szűrös declared the Democratic Republic of Hungary, which has been lasting until today. Hungary joined NATO in 1999 and is part of the European Union since 2004. As of today, Hungary has left its socialist past behind and is a proud democracy in Central Europe, even though it has to deal with poverty and corruption in some regions.
