Matthieu Mendola (also known as "The Architect") is one of Agent 47's targets in the HITMAN™ bonus mission A House Built on Sand.

Background[]

At first glance, there is nothing remarkable about Mendola. He is a hard worker, a family man and has been considered a loyal employee of Hamilton-Lowe for the last decade.

Mendola was one of the top architect students at "ETH Zurich" and was quickly snatched up Hamilton-Lowe. However, creative differences have made him increasingly dissatisfied with his job situation, causing him to betray his employer and become an industry spy for Hamilton-Lowe's primary regional competitor, China Corp.

Personality[]

Matthieu Mendola is highly superstitious architect, making him a man of routine. Breaking these routines can allegedly make him fairly unpredictable. He has a very nervous, jittery personality which is exacerbated by the pressure of his impending deal with Kong Tuo-Kwang, and if led into an isolated area through some ruse he will quickly become suspicious and attempt to leave. He talks to himself frequently, trying to psych himself up for the deal.

Matthieu holds the local citizenry in contempt and is rude to shopkeepers who approach him. If the player approaches him while disguised as one of Kong's bodyguard (in order to lead him to the meeting area), he will express disgust at his surroundings and admonish the player for being late. However, if brought to the meeting location safely, he will immediately relax and thank the player before heading upstairs.

Using the bodyguard disguise, 47 can guide Matthieu into an unoccupied area of the city for an unnoticed kill. However, his suspicious nature will cause him to become nervous after only a short period of time, and he will head for an exit.

He is also seeking a fortune teller in the city, to determine his fate whenever he gets the chance to meet Kong. This gives 47 an opportunity to disguise as Zaki Diab, and approach Matthieu to escort him going to the fortune teller's magic shop. As 47 pretends to predict his future. he can kill Matthieu by shoving his head into the crystal ball's standee, which will kill him. If 47 waits too long during the fortune telling session, Mendola will suspect something and attempt to leave. Alternatively, should 47 dismiss the real fortune teller's customer, Mendola will enter and have his fortune read. Zaki Diab will accurately foresee that Mendola will become rich in the upcoming deal but that he is being stalked by a "tall, dark stranger" and advise Mendola to leave the city. However, Mattieu's greed will overcome his skittishness, and he will stay to do the deal with Kong.

His favorite food to eat in Marrakesh would have to be escargots. He talks to one of the food vendors that back in Paris, he used to eat a lot of snails when he lived there. The bowl of snails in the snail stand closest to the Shisha Cafe can be poisoned, which he will eventually eat, to potentially kill him. He also eats from a basket of dates once early in the mission. As he passes through the square's east alley, he is hesitant that the phone booth being under repair should be immediately fixed. He expresses dismay to the handyman fixing the phone that he needs to call his contact as soon as possible because Kong is unable to properly contact him back. If 47 dismisses the mechanic and sabotages the payphone, Mendola will attempt to call using the phone.

In the A House Built on Sand mission, Matthieu carries the Hamilton-Lowe Documents, and when he is pacified or killed he will drop them, allowing the player to retrieve them and fulfill a mission objective.

Trivia[]

  • Matthieu Mendola is one of the few targets in the entire trilogy that is automatically introduced when the game starts, since he starts nearby his parked car at the public market.
  • He is also the only target that can be escorted with more than one outfit, namely the Bodyguard and the Fortune Teller.
  • During the mission, Matthieu is not accompanied by any bodyguard, and during a target lockdown, he will panic but will not be escorted in a safe zone.
  • Mendola's conversation with the Fortune Teller (or with 47 disguised as the Fortune Teller) will be different if Mendola has been knocked out, robbed of the documents, and then revived.
  • Similarly, disguising as a bodyguard and attempting to lead Mendola to the meeting area if he has been robbed of the documents will result in him refusing and telling the player to go away.
