The Ratings system is the main mission grading system first introduced in Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, and carried out until Hitman: Blood Money.
Depending on how well, stealthy, or aggressively the player carries out the mission, a rating will be given. The factors that influence the rating include: "noise" (which includes witnesses, disruption caused by explosives, heard gunshots, being recorded on video, etc.), the number of fatalities, and whether the fatalities are targets, guards, police or civilians. For example, a large number of civilian deaths with no witnesses or found bodies may result in the "Serial Killer" rating. Conversely, a brazen assault with many witnesses, unsilenced gunfire and deaths among guards may result in a rating such as "Loose Cannon" or "Thug." In addition, the use of a particular weapon for killings may result in a special rating.
The highest rank the player can get is Silent Assassin, which stipulates that there be no witnesses, no bodies found, and no fatalities other than the targets.
Conversely, the lowest or worst ranking the player can attain is Mass Murderer. Poor or negative ratings affect Notoriety in Blood Money.
In Hitman 2: Silent Assassin and Hitman: Contracts, if you gain a Silent Assassin rating, you will be awarded a "Bonus Weapon", while in Hitman: Blood Money you will instead gain a $150,000 bonus to the total mission payout. Other high level ratings also award a select amount of cash.
In Absolution and the World of Assassination trilogy, Play Styles replace the Ratings system.

Exemptions[]
In Silent Assassin, missions The Gontranno Sanctuary, Redemption at Gontranno, Training Area and Requiem do not (normally) offer bonus rewards or rankings upon "completion", nor is it possible under normal circumstances to view the after-mission completion menu for these levels.
The Graveyard Shift does not feature an after-mission stat screen because it directly continues into the following mission, The Jacuzzi Job. An unlock can still be acquired if the player attains a Silent Assassin rank, but any other attained ratings will not be visible.
The tutorial mission of Blood Money, Death of a Showman can be completed and a ranking obtained, but the ranking itself can only be confirmed by the post-mission Newspaper Headline, rather than a mission completion screen. The rating seen during a cutscene following the mission always shows Silent Assassin, despite the fact that the rating is incredibly difficult to attain, and requires going against tutorial methods.
In Contracts, if the Training Area is somehow completed with a Silent Assassin ranking, all weapons will be unlocked upon the next visit. This level cannot be completed through any normal means otherwise. This is most likely an remnant debug method.
Forcing a Complete Level cheat in Hideout will cause the completion of the last level unlocked, if the Story mode is not yet completed. If it is completed, it will take the player straight back to the mission select menu.

Trivia[]
- The rating "The Russian Hare" is named after a WWII Russian sniper (Vasily Zaitsev[1]) whose surname stems from the Russian word for 'hare'. He later trained snipers for the Red Army and those students came to be known as 'Russian Hares'.
- Despite sharing the same name, some standard ratings have different requirements.
- Several ratings are unobtainable due to nonsensical requirements, such as Electrocutor and Dr. Death, suggesting the ratings system was developed earlier than most in game features.
- The Fibre Wire is the only usable weapon with two separate Special Ratings, one requiring stealth, and the other not.
