Romania is a country located in Southeast Europe. It is the birthplace of Agent 47 and already appeared various times throughout the series.

In the Middle Ages, the Romanian region was divided into three principalities, namely Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania, which quickly fell under the influence of the surrounding great powers. Wallachia and Moldavia became part of the Ottoman Empire, while Transylvania was annexed by Hungary, which then again became a part of the Austrian Empire in 1515.

The Romanian people stayed oppressed until 1878, when the Russian Empire defeated the Ottoman Empire in the Russo-Turkish War and guaranteed the independence of several Balkan states, including Romania, even though it only consisted of Wallachia and Moldavia, the former Ottoman parts of their native country, at that time. The Austrian part, Transylvania, gained independence not until 1918, when Austria-Hungary was defeated by the Entente in World War I. In 1940, the Kingdom of Romania joined the Axis during World War II, but changed sides in 1944 when King Michael staged a coup against the military dictatorship of fascist politician Ion Antonescu, who overthrew the old King Carol II and seized power in 1940.

However, in 1948, King Michael was forced by the Romanian Communist Party to abdicate. It was the end of the Kingdom of Romania. The newly declared Romanian People's Republic became part of the Warsaw Pact and existed until 1989, when Communist Dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu was executed during the Romanian Revolution. After that, the country became a democratic and market-based republic, which has been lasting until today. Romania joined NATO in 2004 and is part of the European Union since 2007. Even though it has one of the strongest economies in the Balkans, it is relatively poor compared to other EU member states, and suffers from poverty in many regions.
