Shadows in the Water is the sixth mission of HITMAN™ 2, originally added as part of a free update for all owners of HITMAN™ III on July 26th, 2022, as a new location.

With the Constant due on the Isle of Sgàil for the annual gathering of the Ark Society in a few weeks, Lucas Grey approaches Agent 47 and Diana Burnwood with a request: his militia, under control of one of Grey's lieutenants Noel Crest, has gone rogue, teaming up with a pirate syndicate operating out of the Andaman Sea to raid a liner and steal a control unit for a private Ether Corp. satellite, presumably intending to extort the powerful company. However, as Ether is a major Providence asset, another militia attack would alert the Constant and make him go into hiding again. Therefore, Crest must be eliminated, and the control unit destroyed or rendered inaccessible to the militia. To form a cover story for ICA, 47 must also eliminate an already ICA-sanctioned target Sinhi "Akka" Venthan, the pirates' rapacious leader, who has partnered with Crest and the militia during their stay on the pirates' homebase Ambrose Island.

SHADOWS IN THE WATER

Lucas Grey’s freighter sails through icy waters. Inside, Agent 47 approaches Diana Burnwood and Olivia Hall.

Diana: "Good morning, 47. The Ark Society’s annual gathering is several weeks away, which should give us ample time to prepare. Meanwhile, Mr. Grey has an off-the-books request. Perhaps you should explain."

Diana turns to Grey, who emerges from the shadows in the corner.

Grey: "Noel Crest. One of my best fixers. Before Romania, I left him in charge of the militia. Told him in no uncertain terms to cease all attacks on Providence, stand by and await further orders. Safe to say, he did not. Crest and his men have gone rogue, reinventing themselves as a glorified gang of international thieves. They specialize in ruthless spectacle heists, with zero regard to collateral damage."

Diana: "I’ve seen the man’s file. What did you expect would happen?"

Grey: "It’s not like I had much choice, seeing as all my best lieutenants were killed by you two."

Diana: "Fair point."

Grey: "Nevertheless, Crest is a rabid dog. He is my responsibility. My mistake. I would like your help correcting it."

Diana: "Current whereabouts?"

Grey: "Ambrose Island, an isolated harbor north from the Strait of Malacca. Coincidentally one of Wazir Kale’s old ports of call. According to my intel, Crest and his men have joined forces with a local pirate syndicate to raid a passing tanker. His goal: the control unit for an Ether Corp satellite being covertly shipped abroad. The satellite is a node in the company’s most secure cloud storage network, so they would pay a fortune to preserve its integrity."

Diana: "What is Crest’s end game?"

Grey: "Extortion, if I had to guess. We don’t have the luxury of a full investigation. For us to move against the Constant, we need Providence to think the threat is over and lower their guard. Another militia attack on Ether would raise alarms."

Diana: "I agree. 47, you’ll need to eliminate Crest and destroy that control unit--or lock the militia out. The satellite cannot fall into their hands. We’ll need a cover story for ICA. Luckily, Akka, the rapacious leader of the syndicate, already has an active ICA contract on her head. Take her out, and we’ll even get our expenses paid."

Grey: "Well. I never had you pegged as a rebel."

Diana: "I’m warming to it."

Grey: "Thank you both. 47, seeing as I know Crest, I’ll provide field support. Meet you out East."

Description[]

After the success of their mission in Vermont, Agent 47, Diana and Lucas Grey have discovered The Constant will be attending a gathering of the Ark Society in several weeks. In the meantime, Grey asks 47 and Diana for their help in dealing with a problem that has arisen within his militia.

After meeting 47 and Diana in Romania, Grey left command of his militia to one of his lieutenants, Noel Crest, with orders to cease all attacks against Providence's assets. Crest instead decided to go rogue, using the militia's resources to stage grand heists across the globe. Crest has now traveled to Ambrose Island, an island port in the Andaman Sea, where he has teamed up with a local pirate syndicate in order to steal a control unit for an Ether Corp satellite, which he plans to use to extort Ether. Beyond the danger of Crest or the pirates obtaining the information within the satellite, an attack on one of their biggest assets would cause Providence to raise their guard, impeding Grey's plan to capture The Constant.

47 must infiltrate Ambrose Island, eliminate Noel Crest, and disable the satellite's control unit, either by destroying it, or by obtaining two keycards needed to activate it. Additionally, he must also eliminate the pirate syndicate's leader, Sinhi "Akka" Venthan, in order to provide a cover story for the ICA.

A longtime militia member, Orson Mills is a favourite under the new leadership. Crest has entrusted him with one of the two keycards needed to access the satellite uplink. You've crossed paths with him before, but this time you're not likely to catch him with his pants down.

Depending on which way you look at it, Agent Smith is either the most or the least lucky intelligence operative in the history of the profession. Since parting ways with CIA he's signed on as an agent for Interpol and was assigned to help local law enforcement monitor piracy along key shipping routes in southeast Asia. He was unfortunately on the wrong tanker at the wrong time, leading to his capture. Agent Smith believes 47 can find the keys to his cell somewhere in Akka's private office.

Target Lockdown[]

If target lockdown is triggered:

  • Akka will be escorted to her office, the pirates' private bar, or the ruins where she has meetings with Crest or 47 disguised as the Hippie.
  • Noel Crest is armed and will engage 47 in armed and hand-to-hand combat, instead of fleeing.

Trivia[]

  • This mission takes place after Another Life, but before the events of The Ark Society, in the explicit two month gap noted in the "Precautions" cinematic in HITMAN 2.
  • As of 2024, the mission was removed from all HITMAN™ III menus and placed in its proper chronology within HITMAN™ 2.
  • Like other HITMAN™ 2 missions, this was the only mission released as part of HITMAN™ III in which there are target IDs affiliated with the Elimination challenges: Crest is called “The Ronin,” and Venthan is called “The Corsair”.
  • The signal tower prominently seen on Ambrose Island is directly lifted from the 'HITMAN™ III' mission Apex Predator.
  • Reading Noel Crest's laptop reveals that he is planning to use the satellite along with the DNA Specific Virus to wipe out the Providence members along with the Partners.
  • During the mission briefing, Lucas Grey mentions that Wazir Kale used Ambrose Island as a port of call.
  • A room contains a projection of the post-humously released "Mumbai Hero", starring Dawood Rangan and Karisma Haasan, paused on the scene that was filmed during the events of Chasing a Ghost, and possibly moments before Rangan's on-screen demise due to a freak industrial fan accident.
  • After the mission is finished, 47 can use the GPS tracker signal to exfiltrate via 2 locations: the north-western beach and the northern bridge. This isn't available in Contracts Mode.
    • When using this exit, a cutscene will play with 47 riding away in a helicopter flown by Grey, interestingly, the model of Grey used is the same one from You Owe Him Nothing, including the bloody hands and gut wound.
