The Envy Contention is an Escalation Contract in The Farewell mission, released as Act 6 of the Seven Deadly Sins premium content of HITMAN™ III to start the "Season of Envy" on September 28th, 2021.

Agent 47 is challenged by the voice of Envy to beat a Rival at eliminating certain targets with certain methods in Mendoza first in order to prove the power of envy and that 47 is indeed the Apex Predator. Whoever scores the most at the end of each round will be the winner, and only total victory will satisfy 47's gnawing jealousy...

Level 1 Intro Speech

"Look what we have here... Agent 47. So cool, so calm, so... Self-assured. Why? You're not a god. You're not the only assassin out there. You're not even the best one, if you ask me. I know a guy who puts your work to shame -- and he wasn't even built for it! Don't believe me? Fine. Beat him to the targets if you can. Take them out the way I want you to. Be faster, be sharper, be everything people say you are. I'll show you the power of envy."

Walkthrough[]

The following information may contain spoilers.

The challenge in each level is to eliminate more targets then the Rival (named either Hernando Ferreyra or Abel Grey), whom you cannot incapacitate to halt their movement or actions. You can always tell where he is by using Instinct to highlight him in blue (like other VIP NPCs, such as The Constant and Diana Burnwood), and if he is nearby your map will be disabled with a noticeable static sound. The Rival has all the limitations, and thus liberties, of any other NPC: he cannot be detected, meaning his script will make him walk through areas out-of-bounds for civilians and perform suspicious and illegal actions but other NPCs don't detect, or rather, ignore him (the supposed master assassin is simply given a free pass to kill anyone he wishes). He will always eliminate targets in a specific order and in specific manners, unless you sabotage them first, by pacification, elimination, etc. While he only walks, since the Rival isn't restricted anywhere, and has the tools needed to assassinate the targets already on his person, he can reach targets fairly quickly, especially if you are going after one and he decides to go after another, so you must remain vigiliant of the Rival's movements. When he is about to eliminate a target, Envy will warn you, a picture-in-picture of the Rival will appear and the music will staccato, indicating he is about to score a point. For the sake of challenge completion, these walkthroughs will detail how to complete all three levels with a Silent Assassin rating without changing out of the Black & White Tuxedo Set, but, unlike the majority of Escalation Contracts, there are no complications prohibiting you from taking disguises and being as reckless as you want; in fact, you do not even need to eliminate any targets, as the Rival will eventually deal with them for you (apart from one which you must eliminate yourself in Level 3).

The only target in Level 1 is Héctor Delgado, former target Rico Delgado's younger brother, and the new head of the Delgado Cartel. Make sure to grab the invitation behind the man smoking by the Parking Lot behind you before heading towards the target. Delgado goes to a few different spots, in order to provide opportunities to kill him in an accident: he begins in the bottom-left corner of the Tasting Room, drinking from a glass of red wine that can be emetically poisoned using a poisonous flower found on the cliff paths west of the Malbec Field, or emetic rat poison found in the tunnel behind the table serving wine north of the Asado Pit, or in the locked cupboard under the stairs to the Cinema (unlockable with a nearby crowbar). He will then go to vomit over a balcony, where you can discreetly push him to his death below. He also goes to the balcony south of the Tasting Room and looks over the grape fields, which is another prime opportunity for a fall accident, but watch out for nearby potential witnesses that move around. Afterwards, he goes up the stairs and stands east of the Asado Pit to smoke. Near him are the end of a hose and an electric lamp. To sabotage the lamp, you must either acquire a screwdriver from the shed at the Boatdock, one stabbed into a barrel in the Production Room or found in the bottom-right corner of the Cinema; alternatively, you can pacify a guard and use their weapon to shoot the lamp, but be careful not to alert anyone. Once Delgado is standing by the lamp, turn the faucet on and he will be electrocuted. You could also turn another faucet on on the other side of the lavender circle to lure him other there and turn it off, at which point you can lure him to the ledge or knock him out and drag him over there and throw him off. Make sure to kill Delgado before the Rival poisons his wine with lethal poison and Delgado drinks it. Once all targets are eliminated, you must return to your seat to finish the level; you do not need to wait for the Rival to make his way back as well.

Walkthrough[]

The following information may contain spoilers.

You now have three targets to eliminate, each with their own optional kill methods. Due to the scoring system, you can let the Rival eliminate one of them and still take victory (but for the sake of completing challenges, you'll want to kill all three of them). Regardless of whether you won or lost the last round, Envy will gift you The Cat's Claw, a knife that will prove useful for a certain target. The Rival always goes after the targets in the same order: Sister Lei, Derek McInnis and then Emma Carlisle, so you should also engage them in that order so that you have as much time as possible with each target.

Sister Lei, Hush's right-hand researcher, is in the Production Room, supervising the workers and grapes on the conveyor belts, checks the supplies in the freezer and monitors the functioning of the grape crusher. Since the prescribed optional kill method is via grape crusher, there is only one "correct" way of eliminating her and satisfying Envy. If you're not quick enough, the Rival will lock the freezer door and trap Lei in there to cause her eventual death. The quickest way to the Production Room is by going down the cliff path to the Malbec Field, the same path the Rival takes. You will likely need to pacify the gaucho in the middle of the path to avoid detection. To sneak into the Production Room, scale some nearby crates and use your camera to open a vent and climb your way through. Stay crouched and sneak along the conveyor belt, then take a left and vault up to the grape crusher and behind a winery worker, whom you must pacify to avoid being spotted pushing Sister Lei into the crusher. Once the worker is pacified (and optionally hidden), eliminating Lei with the crusher is relatively straight-forward, as long as you're either stealthy and/or quick enough to avoid having her spot you and run away.

The next person the Rival will target is Derek McInnis, Kronstadt scientist, who is working in the Fermentation Room next door to the Production Room; he inspects the wine pump, mops the floor and cleans the floor of the grape crusher. Make sure to grab the wrench on a table by the lone worker with a clipboard next to the grape crusher before engaging McInnis. Since the prescribed optional kill method is with a knife, you should use The Cat's Claw you obtained at the start of the level. However, unlike the other targets, this method will cause his body being discovered to void your Silent Assassin rating, so you must be careful around the workers and guards that also walk around the room, as well as looking out for the Rival, who will eventually crush McInnis with the grape crusher if you don't prevent him. A scripted method is to sabotage the wine pump with a wrench to overflow the tanks. Once Yates turns up and yells at his employees, McInnis will leave the Fermentation Room to smoke, going outside, then taking the stairs up to the Atrium and eventually stopping to lean on a railing next to a worker stirring one of the tanks. The best opportunity to eliminate him is before he makes his way up the stairs, as after that he remains very exposed. Lure him to a crate he stands near when he exits the Fermentation Room, then kill him and hide his body. A quicker but riskier way is to kill him while he cleans the crusher's floor, then dump his body behind the short wooden panels at the back and drag it behind as much cover as possible.

The final target is Emma Carlisle, member of the dethroned Carlisle family. She spends the mission at the Asado, smoking by a gas heater lamp and tasting appetizers by the wine-serving table north of the Asado Pit. The optional method for eliminating her is poison, so you must poison the appetizers. While you can obtain the lethal poison pill jar from the Villa Bathroom, there is a much more convenient way of procuring lethal poison. There is a distillation kit in the corridor behind the serving table, and poisonous flowers next to the appetizers. Take one of the flowers, sneak into the corridor, then repair the distillation kit with the wrench you obtained earlier, and finally insert the poisonous flower to get a vial of lethal poison. You must be careful poisoning the appetizers, as there is a man nearby who also tastes them and can be accidentally poisoned or spot you commiting a suspicious act, so only poison the food once Carlisle is nearby and the man is facing away; don't take too long, as the Rival will sabotage a gas heater lamp and Carlisle will blow herself up by lighting a cigarette near it.

Level 3[]

Level 3 Intro Speech

"Why even fight this? Wouldn't it be nice if someone WAS better than you? If you could look at them and feel that little spike of jealousy driving you to push harder than you would on your own? When you're the best, who can you compare yourself to? You get complacent. You get comfortable... And that doesn't sound like your thing."

Walkthrough[]

The following information may contain spoilers.

The final level starts by giving you a Jaeger 7 Green Eye sniper rifle, and an ICA Briefcase to store it in. This time, the Rival will go after West, then Dhar, then Rutter. At the start of the level he will make his way up to the Water Towers, where another Jaeger 7 Green Eye is already mounted and ready to be used. He will then slowly pick off each target in the above order, so be aware that you cannot use the Rival’s proximity as an indication of how much time is remaining. However, if you remove the sniper rifle from the mount (including while the Rival is still aiming down its scope), the Rival will then go to the targets and deal with them more close-up, still in the same order as above, so this can give you more time, albeit forcing you to divert to the Water Towers and take the sniper rifle off the mount (you don't have to take it with you, just take it and immediately drop it).

The first target the Rival, and suitably you, will go after is Helen West, the secretive muffin lady of Whittleton Creek, who occupies the ground-floor of Yates' Villa. She has a drink of water or a taste of a cupcake in the Kitchen/Living Room, has a smoke on the west patio, browses her phone on the patio outside the Back Yard, and warms her hands by the fireplace in the Foyer. The Rival will eventually eliminate her by shooting her on the patio or, if you've removed the sniper rifle from the equation, poisoning her drink. The optional kill method prescribed for her is by explosion, and there are two ways of accomplishing this in a manner that will be treated as an accident if her body is discovered (which will be likely considering the density of people around her). The first method is to use a propane flask. There are three on the map, but the most convenient ones are either the one behind the Shrine at the bottom of the cliff path behind the Villa, or one found in the storage shed next to the Boat Dock, the latter being better since that shed also contains a Villa Key handy for infiltration. While you can simply drop the flask at West's feet and detonate it anywhere, an easier way is to sneak into the Villa Bedroom using the pipes on the exterior of the building, then drop the propane flask down the chimney shaft when West is standing next to it to automatically detonate it next to her without endangering yourself. Failing that, another more complicated method is to sabotage the stove in the Kitchen/Living Room that West drinks her water by with a wrench that can be acquired from the roof of the security trailer next to the Parking Lot behind the seat you start on. This will require knocking out and hiding the bodies of the two maids also in the Kitchen; unfortunately the nearest hiding spot is a closet in the Foyer, next to the fireplace West stands by, which means you will need good timing when dragging the bodies, plus you will need to keep an eye on either of the Yates and their bodyguards or Aron Ford Jr. potentially passing through the Foyer as well. Remember to turn the stove off and leave it off before sabotaging the stove to prevent your own death and to lure West into the lethal trap.

The next target is Karan Dhar, A.K.A. the Kashmirian, freelance assassin and 47's erstwhile partner during his assignment in Mumbai. He hangs around the front patio of the Villa, looking over a pinned map of Mumbai (despite being thousands of miles away in Argentina and both targets already having been killed months prior), then wanders around the eastern path of the Villa exterior, before stopping to look over the Back Yard, which is where the Rival will shoot him, or he will tamper with a gas heater lamp on the front patio next to where the Kashmirian smokes to blow him up. The prescribed optional kill method for Dhar is by electrocution, and again, there are two ways of achieving this. One is to turn on the tap in the Back Yard which happens to create a water puddle next to an electric floor lamp and where Dhar happens to stand when he stops in the Back Yard. You will need to shoot the lamp when Dhar is in the puddle, so a good way of doing this is getting onto the Villa's roof and shooting the lamp with your Jaeger 7 Green Eye, but be careful for wandering guards potentially also being electrocuted. Another way is to first acquire a car battery from the Grape Shed from the Malbec Field on the other side of the map, or the storage room behind the Water Towers (with a gaucho right in front of it); next, you must turn on the water pump next to the van containing the asado torches on the Front Patio of the Villa, then lure Dhar into the puddle when he is leaning on a column at the front of the Villa and throw the battery onto it; be careful not to lure anyone standing by the van by accident instead.

The third target is Maxwell Rutter, the senior race official of the Miami Global Innovation Race. He has a small route near the Dance Floor, leaning over railings south of the Reception and drinking a glass of red wine on a table by the steps leading to the exterior of the Production and Fermentation rooms. The Rival will attempt to eliminate him last by shooting him or lethally poisoning his wine glass. The optional kill method for Rutter is shooting him with a sniper rifle; logically, the easiest way of doing this is with the rifle given to you at the start of the mission, but you can also use the Rival's if you get your hands on it. There are very limited options with Rutter due to his exposure. You could get him to drink some wine at the tasting table he stands by, but that would require changing disguises. You can poison the wine glass he drinks in his pathed route, using the poisonous flower / emetic rat poison possibly used in Level 1 (see above), but make sure to stay crouched when doing so. Once poisoned, Rutter will vomit into a lavender patch nearby which you can shoot and subsequently hide his body in. You could also take out the bodyguard standing nearby and hide him in a lavender patch, then lure Rutter into one using a coin or other thrown distraction. Finally, when you are informed by Envy that the Rival is about to strike, Rutter will walk up to the Asado floor and stand exposed in a spot by another lavender patch, in order for the Rival to get a shot on him (even if he doesn't have a rifle and is instead poisoning his wine). This is an opportunity to beat the Rival to the punch by hiding in the lavender and subduing Rutter inside it once he stands next to it, then simply taking out your sniper rifle and shooting his unconscious body with it.

With West, Dhar and Rutter eliminated, Envy informs you that the Rival's usefulness has expired and you must eliminate him before he sits down on his seat to exit. Since the Rival can be in many places when he starts to leave, there are many places you can take him out and hide his body, a notable example being the tunnel between the Parking Lot and the Water Towers the Rival takes if he was still using the sniper rifle once the third target was eliminated. He will also stand next to the lavender patch by the seats and gloat one last time before leaving, which may be an opportunity to snipe him with the Jaeger 7 Green Eye so that his body lands in the lavender. Once the Rival is dead, Envy will deliver his final verdict of your abilities, and you can exit and complete the Escalation Contract.

Trivia[]

  • When 47 is near the Rival the map becomes unavailable. However, you can still pause the game and access the map from the Objectives menu.
  • The skybox has been changed from sunset to daytime. This has resulted in some clouds not appearing properly and partly disappearing when viewed from certain angles. IOI claimed to fix this in a later patch, but it in fact remains bugged.
  • You can prevent the Rival from leaving his seat in Level 3 by skipping the opening cutscene, grabbing the sniper rifle and concealing it in the briefcase before the game forcibly resets 47 into his seat (you will have less time to do this with faster loading times). Doing this will make the game awkwardly stick the sniper rifle to 47's arm and A-pose him before teleporting the sniper rifle into the briefcase and making 47 stand up. Since you haven't pressed the dedicated button to make 47 stand up, however, the Rival thinks you are still seated and won't stand up. As long as you don't sit back down, you now have as much time as you need to eliminate the other 3 targets. Unfortunately, it gives you almost no time to eliminate the Rival, as he is already at the exit point.
  • The Rival can only eliminate targets in specific manners; this means it is possible to render him harmless for every target by destroying glasses or bottles after the Rival has poisoned them (as doing this before he does it will make the targets spawn another one in for him to poison), activating the freezer door or destroying gas heater lamps before he can tamper with them, stealing his sniper rifle before he can use it or sabotaging the wine pump to prevent McInnis from ever standing under the grape crusher again.
  • If you are in your starting seat when you complete the mission, you won't be able to leave the seat or finish the mission, effectively soft-locking you and forcing you to restart.
  • If you pacify or eliminate the Rival before you are allowed to in Level 3, the mission failed text will spoil the hidden objective before it's revealed.
  • The Rival drops a couple of lethal poison vials when pacified or eliminated, while Helen West drops her signature "Rude Ruby" pistol.
  • The Rival's name can be viewed by selecting his objective on the map once he becomes a target in Level 3: it was formerly Hernando Ferreyra, but at some point was changed to Abel Grey.
  • When you are close to the Rival, you can hear him whispering things to you like "You've already lost", "Amateur" and "Watch this."
  • The Background music for Haven Island is used during the mission.
